Cloth Book Series I (2021)

A series of 3 cloth books sized 10 x 14cm, as to be 'handheld' for the average toddler; alluding to the tactile, material books often given to infants.

The content pairs my child's outlined hand drawings with excerpts printed from a study made by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn in the field of language acquisition and non-verbal communication in infancy. These excerpts focus on the capability of infants to make spontaneous gestures. These gestures often symbolically represent the infants needs and desires, as well as external states and qualities.

The content, materality and child hand-size scale of the work collectively emphasise the importance of hands in the infants first attempts at communication.
