'My Mother Told Me' (2021)
The two pages are connected by a common thread; as I stitch the words into the second, I unpick them from the first.
The work seeks to materialise the idea of passing on stories through generations, and references ideas of memories and language slipping away as new generations learn them. Inevitably, it deals with the unreliable nature of anecdotal testimonies.
Each time I stitch the words they slightly vary in appearance, as each time stories are retold they vary in how they are spoken. Each time I unpick the words small parts of thread are lost- much like some details are often cast aside as stories are retold.
